Aside from the bluffing and the obligatory bets, another significant aspect of the game is the ranking of the cards. Each individual card is ranked from best to worst. For instance, the ace may be treated as the lowest card in some games, while a seven in a pack of a particular suit is considered the highest.

Other forms of poker may have a side pot, where different players can compete. The pot may be won by the highest card in a flush, or by the best two pairs in a hand. However, these types of games are generally more complicated than the standard versions of poker.

The first round of cards in a poker game is called the deal. The dealer shuffles the cards for each player, dealing one at a time in a face-up arrangement. The dealer’s position is determined by the player to his left or right. He is also referred to as the big blind.
